How to Be a Great Team Leader

01st June 2019

Great team leaders are the difference between a functional team and a dysfunctional team. No matter your industry or profession, it’s very likely that you will need to work as part of a team at some point in your career. Every worker should know what is required of a great leader, because you never know when it will be necessary to step up and take on the role. In this article, we will discuss some of the traits and practices that make leaders great.

Lead by Example

Nobody appreciates a leader or boss who thinks they are above the tasks that they delegate. Every member of a team should feel valued and respected, and that goes for their work as well as for who they are. If you want your team to behave courteously, safely, diligently and optimistically, it is important that you do the same. Additionally, if you want your team to be accountable for their responsibilities, and complete things on time and in an orderly fashion, it pays to do those things yourself.

Listen to Your Team

Leadership is the role of coordinating and communicating with all members of your team. A leader who can’t listen to the demands and requests of their team cannot effectively lead. You need to know what is happening at the ground level, and to do that, you need to listen to the people there. If the contractors say they need particular machinery like a franna crane or a gantry crane to finish the job, chances are they need it. There might be a smarter way to do the job with a different kind of crane hire, but if you don’t take the time to listen to their needs, it could cause significant delays down the line.

Being able to effectively listen to your team and their needs is the best way to resolve disputes and conflicts that could significant damage to your project and timeline.

Be Gentle, But Firm

As the team lead, it is your responsibility to make sure the job gets done. This can mean internalising time pressures and demands, and it could be easy for this to unleash your frustrations upon your team. Don’t allow your team to become stressed under your guide. This doesn’t mean that you can’t request a thing gets done within a reasonable time frame, but do so gently and in way that values their time and energy.
